CAUSES OF CATARACTS
Determining the cause of your cataracts might not always be a straightforward process since there can be several potential factors at play. But if you think you might be at risk, or could be experiencing symptoms of cataracts, it can be helpful to understand why your cataracts develop.
What causes cataracts?
Many factors can contribute to cataract development, and while some of the lifestyle-related causes are under our control, other common causes like age, genetics and pre-existing health conditions are inevitable and can’t be avoided. Below is a list of some of the most common risk factors to look out for.
Lifestyle changes that may reduce your risk of developing cataracts
Unfortunately, there are no proven ways to stop the development of cataracts. Regular eye tests and examinations by an eye care professional will ensure you keep on top of any changes to your eye health.
There are some lifestyle changes that can help reduce the risk and slow progression, including the following:
- Protect the eyes from the sun: Eyes should be protected from UV rays wherever possible. Wearing UV-protective sunglasses that filter out UV rays up to 400nm and wearing a wide-brimmed hat can help.
- Quit smoking: Smoking is bad for your general health and your eyes. When it comes to cataracts, smoking is a risk factor you can control.
- Manage your health conditions: Those with health conditions, such as diabetes, can be more prone to cataracts. It’s important to manage these conditions properly to reduce your risk.
- Reduce alcohol intake: Drinking alcohol excessively can increase the likelihood of developing cataracts for some people, so it’s recommended to only consume alcohol in moderation.
- Eat healthily: Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet which includes plenty of foods rich in vitamins and antioxidants can improve overall eye health and lower your risk of developing cataracts.
